2022 Conference on John Milton

Papers (not to exceed twenty minutes reading time) are invited on any aspect of Milton studies, from close readings of particular works to broader investigations of themes and trends. The conference will be held on the campus of Saint Louis University, in conjunction with the Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

Please submit 250-word abstract, along with a brief academic biography to the SLU Symposium website: https://www.smrs-slu.org/submit.html. Proposals for sessions and round-table discussions are also welcome. Deadline for submissions: December 31, 2021.

Dreams used to be the Surrealists' favourite terrain to explore, while their interpretation a modus operandi for investigating human psyche 'fossilized' by the pressures of an increasingly urbanized society, war trauma, while doing so against the background of nascent science of psychoanalysis. For this purpose they devised creative strategies like automatic writing, collage, or exquisite corpse to break away from internalized constraints.

Violence has become one of the features of the present-day world, although it has existed throughout times, playing undoubtedly an important role in the development of any society. The analysis of violence is a complicated and controversial issue nowadays, as it may cover different levels – interpersonal, institutional, collective violence; as well as different forms – racist crimes, gender basedviolence, genocide etc. The conference will be an attempt to shed light on the social construction and nature of violence, applying an interdisciplinary approach to various manifestations of violence.
