Panel title: Towards a Greater Inclusion of Women Authors of the Spanish Novel of Historical Memory

Panel description: Although the Spanish novel of historical memory has enjoyed immense popularity since the turn of the twenty-first century, this fictional look back to the Spanish Civil War and the years of the Franco dictatorship began soon after the end of the dictatorship. Yet, within this large body of fictional work spanning forty-five years, the many women authors who have contributed to the genre share a disproportionately smaller level of prominence and recognition than their male counterparts. Evident in years of press reviews and lists of award winners and nominees, a critical consideration of such novels is also particularly lacking in academic publications and anthologies. In many cases, Spanish novels of historical memory written by women and portraying women characters sell well, yet only a few are included within academic critique.

This panel seeks to examine critically Spanish novels of historical memory that reflect on the Civil War and years of dictatorship, written by women from 1976 to the current day. Especially important is the inclusion of works by women authors who have received less critical attention, and comparative approaches are encouraged. All theoretical, literary, and cultural approaches are welcome.
