Today, much of our research and information gathering takes place online. The reality is that despite information literacy efforts, many, if not most, users are increasingly vulnerable online. How do we care about information literacy, data literacy, and media literacy?

For example, in early 2020, researchers found that the websites of over 100 US universities—including MIT, Stanford, and Columbia—had been hacked and compromised by bad actors and essay mills (Rodolfo & Hart-Davidson 2020). In brief, Hart-Davidson describes the process as “laundering a bad [web address] through a good one.” From a “disinfodemic” to “information disorder” to “information overload” to “dark patterns,” scholars and researchers are sounding the alarm on how users are increasingly bombarded with corrupted communication flows, cybersecurity breaches, convoluted data, and more.

This panel aims to consider modes, means, and methods of information sharing and communication online in an age of mis/dis/mal-information. How do we bolster resilience of users online? This panel engages deeply with the theme of NeMLA 2022 by addressing both the literal cybersecurity and information vulnerabilities online as well as considering the ways in which we “care” about these phenomena. This panel invites examinations of information, data, and media literacies from pedagogical, cultural, technological perspectives. New considerations of digital literacies and alternative perspectives are also encouraged.
