The fifth Words and Music conference organized by the English Department of the Faculty of Arts and the Music Department of the Faculty of Education at the University of Maribor will explore the relation between words, music and propaganda, and the place of that relation in history and in modern contemporary culture.
Papers from all fields of study are welcome, including musicology, history, political science, law, anthropology sociology, psychoanalytic theory, Marxism, feminist theory, and translation studies, and from different critical perspectives, such as literary and linguistic analysis, Gender Studies, ethnomusicology, critical musicology, stylistics, and popular music studies, applied to genres including folk and protest music, American and European jazz, popular and classical music, and rap.

Nationalism and propaganda in film scores

The Dixie Chicks and Pussy Riot: Female Voices Take On the Establishment

National Anthems and Patriotic Songs
The Voice of the Outsider: the Role and Position of Expatriates in Music
Satire or Sedition: International Acceptance or Prosecution of Freedom of Speech
Didactic Dimensions of Words, Music and Propaganda
Interested individuals are asked to submit an abstract of up to 250 words (including presentation title) and complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, and contact telephone number) by May 1, 2022. Submissions in English, Slovene and German are all welcome.
