Thematic focus and rationale 

According to the United Nations, nearly a third of the 4 billion people living in urban areas today are children. By 2050, 70 percent of the world’s children will live in cities. How has recent sociological research engaged with children and youth living in metropolitan areas in countries around the world? This volume seeks to bring together recent research, theory and policy- relevant work that focuses on this social group. 

 

Possible topics could include, but are not limited to

•the pandemic, children, and the city;

•children and/or youth migration to or from cities;

•disabled children and/or youth living in urban contexts;

•Indigenous childhood/youth and the city;

•Black childhood/youth and the city;

•anti-Black racism, other racisms, and urban childhood/youth

•children/youth and being LGBTQ+ in the city

•children, the city, and social class;

•children/youth and consumerism and the city:

•myths and complex realities surrounding child safety and risk in cities;

•children/youth navigating urban spaces/cityscapes;

•children/childhood/youth and the role of nature in an urban setting;

•urban child care and/or school experiences;

•the Child Friendly Cities initiative;

•children and urban planning;

•children/youth, outdoor education, outdoor play;

•children/youth and climate change and the city;

•children/youth and contested spaces in the city;

•Interrogating notions of the “inner city” with children

•being a child/youth in the city during social, economic, and/or political crises.

Deadline and submission details 

The submission deadline for abstracts (200 words) is April 30th, 2022. 

Authors of abstracts accepted to this series will be notified by May 30th, 2022. 

Complete chapters are due to guest editors by August 31, 2022. 

Revisions will be sent out by October 15, 2022. 

Final chapters will be due by November 15, 2022. 

The date by which the volume will be submitted to the publisher is December 1, 2022. 

Papers will be accepted and published in English only.
