Culture, memory and identity-these three concepts are so inextricably intertwined that often the places of contestation become blurry. While the encoding of culture evaluates a host of elements like rituals, education, books, cinema, clothes, food, shared stories, local and global histories, in terms of cultural memory it includes a collective form of memory which is shared by a group of individuals. Art forms, aesthetic traditions and varieties, historical constructions, texts, movable and immovable segments of fluent and changing multiplicities of cultural forms and techniques, all become important ingredients in forming and altering the identity of an individual. Whose memory are we talking about? What is it like to talk about culture, memory and cultural memory at a particular time and space? What does it feel like in belonging to a part of memory that inculcates shared identities among individuals?

There are very strong cultural concepts that are deeply embedded in the larger matrix of how to create both individual and collective identity. The circumstances might change, the but as part of cultural memory, the places of memory must remain concrete and very distinct, and not affected by the circumstances. There are regular and part of the repetitive practices like festivals, rites, ceremonies, literary symbols and signs, structures and hierarchies that become part of the cultural memory and as time moves on, they become essential tools in establishing human identity. As Agnes Heller points out in the work Cultural Memory, Identity and Civil Society:

“Cultural memory is rather embodied in objectivations which store meanings in a concentrated manner, meanings shared by a group of people who take them for granted. These can be texts, such as sacred scrolls, historical chronicles, lyric or epic poetry. They can also be monuments, such as buildings or statues, sharedmaterial signs, signals, symbols and allegories asstorages of experience, memorabilia erected asreminders.” (Heller 1)
