1. Women in French I: French Women Shaping the Fantastic & the Quotidian in the US Film Industry (Panel / In-Person)

Since the beginning of cinema, French female film producers, directors, actresses, and script writers steadily influenced developments in the American film industry. In their role as directors and producers they promoted American actors and actresses; as actresses they contributed to the shaping of genres, putting spice into the humdrum of everyday life (melodrama) and exploring the realms of the fantastic (horror movies). Their nationality, their gender, and their “cute” accents reinforced and continues to reinforce for the American viewer clichéd views of French culture and Frenchness. The actresses often portray heroines who frequently oscillate between romance, passion, and unconventionality, adhering to and defying traditional gender roles.
