TEMPER: A Women and Gender Studies Graduate Journal

The Women and Gender Studies Graduate Student Union at the University of Toronto is pleased to introduce TEMPER, a new journal featuring interdisciplinary scholarship by graduate students.

TEMPER is a space where graduate students and their work can shine. We strive to provide  greater opportunities in graduate professional development, scholarship, and community development within the feminist university community.

For our inaugural issue, TEMPER is seeking submissions that capitalize on the multiple meanings of "temper". To temper can be an act of strengthening, or an act of neutralizing. Temper can be anger or emotionality, what we are usually asked to “control”. Temper can also be the root of other words, a fragment of temperature, temporality, contemporary, temperance, temperament, temporary. In all its uses, temper suggests disruption, instability, and antagonism, either resolved or in process. It offers a variety of pathways into critical scholarship, and a rich source of inspiration for the journal.

Submitters are encouraged to expand on the multiple meanings of TEMPER, tracing its relevance to our contemporary moment with topics like:

●      Activism and resistance

●      Temporality 

●      Transnational and the Global

●      Intersectionality

●      Race and Racialization

●      Queer and Trans Studies

●      Affect Theory

●      Climate Change

●      Aesthetics and Performance

●      Feminist Archives

●      Postcolonial/Decolonial Feminism

We encourage submissions from graduate students at all levels and in all disciplines engaging questions of gender, sexuality, race, class, and identity.

Submission guidelines:

-       Please send papers of 2000-4000 words to temper.wgs.journal@gmail.com by June 15, 2022.

-       Submissions should be Word documents (.docx) and use Chicago Style Citation. They should be in English.

-       Submissions should include a cover page containing the title of your paper, your name, institutional affiliation, and degree level. Identifying information should occur nowhere else in the document.

-       Please also include a 250-300 word abstract with 3-5 keywords.
