Challenges Faced by Women in the Covid-19 Pandemic
CONCEPT NOTE
Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing crisis exacerbated deep seated social inequalities within our societies. It brought about different implications for men and women throughout the world. Women were seen to face compounding burdens: from being over-represented working in healthcare systems to doing majority of unpaid care work in households to facing high risks of economic insecurity to being under an increased risk of violence, exploitation, abuse or harassment during times of crisis and quarantine. The poorest and the most marginalized women and girls faced most the risks without the means to absorb the economic shock.
As Covid-19 continues to spread around the world with severe variants, the impact of the pandemic on women continues to worsen. Despite all this, women’s voices are still not well represented in the media and their perspectives are ignored in the policy response to the crisis.
