This edited collection would focus on the application of queer theory and queer approaches to Disney films that are infamous for queerbaiting, queer coding, and queer pandering, as well as the parodies of Disney films that stem from this.

Previous works such as Kay Turner and Pauline Greenhill’s The Transgressive Tales (2012) looks into the queer retellings of the Brothers Grimms' edited collection of tales. This collection seeks to go beyond the Brothers Grimm and showcase queer approaches to the Disney fairy tale. With the 'Don't Say Gay' Bill and the apathetic response, it is time to shed light on this academic area and the link between Disney fairy tale films and the queer community.

This collection is particularly looking for works that look at the fairy tale films and how there are queer elements hidden within or approaching the film from a queer standpoint. The following is a general list of topics this collection is searching for:

  • Queerness in Disney Films
  • Queer Approaches to Disney Films
  • Queering the Gender Roles
  • Queer Parodies of Disney Fairy Tale Films
  • Adapting Queer Tales into Film
  • Queer Subversion of the Fairy Tale Films
  • Queerness in Songs and Music in the Films
  • The 'Gay Gaze' or the 'Queer Gaze'
  • Queering of Places and Landscapes
  • Queer analysis of a Fairy Tale Film

The film chosen for analysis should be one that is produced by the Disney Corporation and claims to be an adaptation of a Fairy Tale, or a literary tale such as the film Alice in Wonderland (1951).  Abstract Submissions Due: 30th September 2022

Abstract submissions should include the following:

  • Abstracts should be 300 words.
