Panel proposed at the 2023 ASLE + AESS Conference: “Reclaiming the Commons”

We are seeking participants for a seminar for the 2023 American Comparative Literature Association Meeting, which will take place at the Sheraton Grand in Chicago, Illinois, March 16-19, 2023.
In ACLA seminars, participants share drafts of their work with seminar panelists prior to the conference. The seminar meets over multiple days to discuss their pre-circulated drafts.
At times, there is a dissonance between what is considered the ‘original’ narrative and its adapted form. For example, the release of Neil Gaiman’s adaptation of his own work, The Sandman, caused controversy amongst those who had read the comic book series, mainly for the casting decisions of actors such as Kirby Howell-Baptiste who played Death and Jennifer Coleman who played Constantine, as their original characters in the comics where white or/and male. In the same vein, Amazon’s recent adaptation of Tolkien’s work, Rings of Power, creates tensions between fans of the author and a modern audience who may not be familiar with the source material because of the discrepancies between the two versions.

CFP for a proposed session for the Society of Early Americanists Biennial Conference, June 8-11, 2023, University of Maryland.
(The conference will be in-person, possibly with a hybrid option.)
Pursuing new directions in the subject of Shakespeare and race and addressing some of the gaps in current conversations about representation, casting, performance, diversity and inclusion, Mixed Race Shakespeares explores the ways in which Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS) might offer alternative readings of the plays and complicate certain trajectories and terminologies. More specifically, this collection aims to challenge hypodescent and monoracial norms, destabilize official racial categories/designations and advance the study of topics such as racial mixing, racial passing, interraciality, biracialism, multiracialism, transracialism and ethnoracialism.
Deadline Extended: Reception: Texts. Readers, Audiences, History, the peer-reviewed journal of the Reception Study Society, is inviting applications for one of its two general editor positions. Published annually by Penn State University Press, Reception presents a forum for scholarly and critical research-based articles in audience and reception studies in literary criticism, cultural and media studies, and the history of reading and book history. Our new editor will be expected to work with the journal’s continuing co-editor and its book-review editor to continue to develop Reception’s role as a leader in presenting new research in the various fields of audience study.
The Comics Arts Conference is now accepting 100- to 200-word abstracts for papers, presentations, and panels taking a critical or historical perspective on comics (juxtaposed images in sequence) for a meeting of scholars and professionals at WonderCon, in Anaheim, CA, March 24–26, 2023. We seek proposals from a broad range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives and welcome the participation of academic and independent scholars.
