The Work of English Studies: Digital Adaptation and Expansion in the Post-Pandemic Age

The fields of English, rhetoric and composition, language and literature, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, film studies, and literary theory have consistently evolved and adapted to new demands within academia. Changes to curricula force us to reconsider our core, service, and competency courses. Market demand for STEM-related jobs compete for students’ attention within the liberal arts. More recently, given the circumstances surrounding and resulting from a global pandemic, we have had to refocus our attention on the need to learn, implement, and adapt to new methods of teaching. These methods often rely on technology, thus setting us on unexpected paths.

For our 2023 annual conference, PCEA invites proposals for in-person and online presentations that explore our expansion from traditional in-person classes to online and hybrid models. We invite conference participants to investigate how this ongoing shift has influenced and continues to shape our pedagogy, our scholarship and our students’ learning experiences.

Topics may include, but are not limited to

  • Examining depictions of technology in literature and film
  • Applying technology to teach writing, literature, culture, film, and gender
  • Exploring spaces of cooperation and conflict between technology and the humanities
  • Applying technological lenses to creative writing

We also invite proposals from faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars from all areas of English Studies for individual presentations, panel proposals, or roundtables. In addition, we welcome the reading of original, yet not published (at the time of submission) poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. Faculty members are also welcome to propose and chair a session of three to five of their best undergraduate scholars or writers. Each presenter will be allowed up to 15 minutes to present. Proposals should specify in-person or online participation.

Submissions will be accepted until February 15, 2023.  Visit www.pcea.online to learn more about the Pennsylvania College English Association.
