"Funny Girls: The Forgotten History of Feisty Young Female Characters in Classic American Comics"

Since 2011, Pippi to Ripley has functioned as a unique academic conference bringing together scholars, graduate students, librarians, high school teachers and undergraduates presenting research side-by-side. As part of our commitment to inclusivity and access, we have created an affordable venue for first-time presenters and a safe, supportive place for established academics who want to stretch beyond their comfort zone and experiment with new media or formats. Conference administration is an experiential learning collaboration between faculty and students.

We invite papers focusing on gender and/or sexuality in popular culture from all countries and time periods; past topics included children’s literature, comics, science fiction, fairytales, music, gaming, films, television, fan fiction and youtube videos.

Pippi to Riply 6: Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture will be held on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY.

Send abstracts of 300 words or fewer to Katharine Kittredge: kkittredge@ithaca.edu. Deadline for proposals is January 15, 2023.
