Virtual Panel on “National Romanticism in Finland”

March 29–April 2, 2023

As part of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR) 2023 Conference (https://www.shsu.edu/academics/english/nassr/) at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, FinnFest USA (https://finnfest.us/) is sponsoring an online panel “National Romanticism in Finland.”

 We invite proposals for 20-minute papers on any aspect of Finland’s National Romanticism. Papers relating to the NASSR 2023 conference theme “Romanticism and Justice” are specifically welcome. Topics could include the following:

  • The Grand Duchy of Finland and the Russian Empire
  • Finland’s national awakening
  • Eugen Schauman
  • Social class and justice in the Grand Duchy
  • Language and the national awakening
  • The glorified peasant
  • Tolstoy and Finland
  • The Golden Age of Finnish Art (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, literature)
  • The role of the Kalevala in Finland’s national awakening
