National Romanticism in Finland

Virtual Panel on “National Romanticism in Finland”
March 29–April 2, 2023
As part of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR) 2023 Conference (https://www.shsu.edu/academics/english/nassr/) at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, FinnFest USA (https://finnfest.us/) is sponsoring an online panel “National Romanticism in Finland.”
We invite proposals for 20-minute papers on any aspect of Finland’s National Romanticism. Papers relating to the NASSR 2023 conference theme “Romanticism and Justice” are specifically welcome. Topics could include the following:
- The Grand Duchy of Finland and the Russian Empire
- Finland’s national awakening
- Eugen Schauman
- Social class and justice in the Grand Duchy
- Language and the national awakening
- The glorified peasant
- Tolstoy and Finland
- The Golden Age of Finnish Art (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, literature)
- The role of the Kalevala in Finland’s national awakening
Please send a 250-word abstract to the panel organizer, Helena Halmari (halmari@shsu.edu), by November 28.
