April 5-8/San Antonio, TX
The focus of this area is to critically examine the definitions and development of Black Popular Culture from the early beginning of minstrelsy performances to the images and people we encounter on a daily basis—especially those images that are reflected in American media. Paper/panel presentations will draw upon theories and concepts in media studies, cultural studies, and discussions pertaining to the construct of Black popular cultural texts within (but not limited to) television programming, Black Comics, content produced for digital distribution (e.g., Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and YouTube), Films, Black Exploitation films, literature, music, poetry (spoken word), and fashion (style).
