The 2022-2023 Illinois Medieval Association Symposium will focus on medieval environments, with the term environment being liberally defined. We are now accepting proposals for 20-minute presentations for our February 17 session. Although we will consider proposals on any aspect of medieval studies, priority will be given to those dealing with medieval environments. This topic includes, but is not limited to, the non-human world, urban environments, cloistered environments, cultural environments, and any topic that conforms in any way to the Oxford English Dictionary definition of “The physical surroundings or conditions in which a person or other organism lives, develops, etc., or in which a thing exists; the external conditions in general affecting the life, existence, or properties of an organism or object,” including the “social, political, or cultural circumstances in which a person lives, esp. with respect to their effect on behaviour, attitudes.”

The IMA Symposium is completely free and held oneline via MS Teams. Sessions begin at 3:00 pm Central. Papers presented at the IMA Symposium are eligible for submission to Essays in Medieval Studies, our peer-reviewed proceedings journal.
