Interrogating the People: Politics and Culture
The School of Liberal Studies, UPES, Dehradun invites applications for its 1st Annual Cultural Studies Workshop (CSW) to be held between October 6-10, 2023, at Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The theme for this year’s workshop is ‘Interrogating The People: Politics and Culture’.
The workshop is framed as an annual pedagogic event spread over six days (five days of discussion with one break day). The objective of the workshop is to bring together 20 Ph.D. students, post-doctoral and early career researchers, faculty members, and eminent scholars in the field of Cultural Studies as well as in the humanities and social sciences to ideate on the broad theme of the workshop. In exceptional cases, candidates with reliable documentary proof of admission to a 2023-24 Ph.D programme may be considered. The focus will be on the two lives of the people: everyday, flesh-and-blood, empirical people, and the concept of the people that draws its life from the enunciative act of the Constitution (‘We, the people of ...’). The workshop will be thematically structured.
Day 1: Who is the People?
Day 2: Democracy and the Contesting People
Day 3: Imaging the People
Day 4: The Consenting People and the Crisis of Liberal Deliberation
Day 5: Neoliberalism, Climate Change, and the Migrating People
At the School of Liberal Studies, we view Cultural Studies as an inter-discipline, and a configuration of discourses with a persistent thrust on the questions of democracy, marginality, and power. Hence, it must be made clear that the proposed CSW is by no means exclusively for scholars of Cultural Studies.
The workshop will bring together 20 participants from across India. Apart from local hospitality, participants will also be provided AC two-tier train fare.
