Description: As Metal Music Studies continues to become more popular in colleges and universities worldwide, more courses are being designed and taught.  This book, Teaching Metal in the College Classroom: Interdisciplinary Approaches, is designed to give scholars in a variety of fields approaches to constructing and teaching courses with a focus on Metal Studies. This book is not a place for someone who wants to learn to play or sing metal music; it is a source for scholars who want to develop their own courses to teach at their colleges and universities. We see an important opportunity to expand the way that metal music and culture is taught. We are looking for creative approaches to share with faculty in any discipline that utilizes metal music studies, and by doing so, expanding the field of metal studies into an area in which little has currently been done. Scholars from all over the world who are teaching metal in the college classroom and/or who want to share their research-based approaches to pedagogy are requested to submit a proposal.  This does not mean that we do not want to see some anecdotal evidence but the majority of the proposal/chapter should have scholarly support. This will be the first book to solely examine approaches to teaching Metal in the classroom, and we are expecting it to be an excellent resource for Metal scholars who are teaching or who would like to teach courses with a Metal Studies theme. Preference will be given to scholars who have taught Metal Studies in a college classroom, but all proposals will be considered. Proposals will also be considered if Metal Studies is a unit contained within a larger course.

Submit:

A 400-word proposal which responds to the following questions or statements:

  1. 1.       What is the theme/description of your proposed chapter?
  2. 2.       Briefly state your background in metal studies and metal music, if any
  3. 3.       Proposers should elaborate on the pedagogical approaches they use in the course, e.g. small groups, video and lyrical analysis, and flipped classrooms
  4. 4.       What was the scholarly discipline (i.e. English, Musicology, etc.) in which the course was taught or being considered?
  5. 5.       If you have not taught the course yet, give a brief outline of your planned approach.
