PAMLA 2023 Panel (Extended Deadline): Setting the Translation Stage, the Effect of Audiovisual Content on Tourism

The panel aims to open a dialogue to discuss the role of audiovisual content in translation and how it could present a model for tourism. This will be done by examining various movies from different cultures and look at their implications and role within the tourism industry, particularly how destinations are mediated across transcultural and transnational borders. The panel will focus on how perspectives change, shift, and exist in their new status via the different acts of translation. The aim is to analyze and shed light on the role of translation in impacting tourist destinations and expectations, thus becoming a strategy to represent a cultural identity and influence social and economic development. Themes and concepts within translation studies, such as the translators in/visibility, agency, and ethics, as well as translation as a form of content creation will be tackled in relation to how the material is promoted. The purpose is to raise awareness regarding the role of the translator in affecting the visual experience, translation, thus, becomes a model for inducing tourism. This panel welcomes independent scholars, academics, and researchers from various fields including but not limited to, cultural studies, literary studies, film and media studies, translation studies, and tourism.
