SCMLA Renaissance Drama (October 12-14, 2023) *DEADLINE EXTENSION*
We are presently accepting abstract submissions for the Renaissance Drama session(s) at the 80th meeting of the South Central Modern Language Association conference.
The conference will be held October, 12-14, 2023, in Corpus Christi, TX.
This year’s SCMLA does not have a stated theme, therefore, any and all inquiries into subjects pertaining to early modern drama are welcome! Additionally, session organizers are especially interested in submissions that consider the ways dramatic works from the period may intersect with and/or share many of the generic questions and conventions–in terms of ethics, philosophical tenets, and/or worldviews–of speculative fiction, particularly interrogating how the subversion of social mores is translated into horror or the ways in which the defiance of accepted boundaries is transformed into science fiction.
For instance, some possible topics for consideration might include:
-
The ways early modern dramatists use Protestant and Catholic ideas about bodily resurrection to speak to conceptions of and questions about (post) apocalyptic time and/or the corporeal undead.
-
How dramatic works of the period contend philosophically and metaphysically with the place of the human in the larger universe to theorize a pre-Lovecraftian concept of cosmic horror.
-
The use of alien or eldritch otherworldly conceptualizations of cultural groups to speak to anxieties about colonization.
-
How the employment of tropes of witchcraft and magic are used to codify a language of misogyny, or xenophobia, and/or other kinds of marginalization.
-
The parallels between Voyage of Discovery and New World Encounter narratives and those of space travel and interactions with extraterrestrial beings.
The session organizers encourage graduate students (at both the MA and PhD levels) as well as early career scholars to submit to this panel!
Please relay abstracts of no more than 500 words to John W. Ellis-Etchison (john.ellisetchison@gmail.com) and Ryan Farrar (rfarrar@collin.edu) by July 01, 2023.
