We invite proposals for individual papers for the Adaptation Studies session at PAMLA's 2023 conference  to be held at the Hilton Portland Downtown in Portland, Oregon between October 26-29, 2023.

Adaptation Studies is a growing field of research that addresses a significant subset of the intersection of film and literature, in which, as Maureen Quinn puts it, literature and film are studied as "two interdependent partial texts that become a new whole." This session invites papers that explore any of the many facets of adaptation studies, including—but not limited to—literature adapted to film, film to video games, novels to graphic novels, and film to textual works, as well as adaptations across cultural and linguistic lines. Papers that engage some aspect of the conference theme of "Shifting Perspectives” are especially welcome. Some topics of particular interest include: new perspectives in adaptation theory, pedagogical strategies for teaching adaptation, case studies of adaptation across new media, and translation and adaptation.

Possible topics could include:

· Authenticity, agency, and creativity of adaptation

· Reception of adaptation, rewriting, or remaking of cultural products

· Cases of adaptation across genres, media, and styles, such as modern and postmodern adaptation

· Graphic novel adaptation and animated adaptation (or Japanese manga and anime adaptation

Please contact Dr. Lianying Shan with any questions. Proposals are due on May 31st.
