Reading Disability: Theory and Practice
Since people with certain deformities have been part and parcel of mankind then why they should be ignored, oppressed, and marginalized. They have even outshined in every field including literature, science, music, dance, sports, and politics. Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, George Washington, Hellen Keller, Franklin D Roosevelt, Frida Kahlo, Ludwig Van Beethovan, Walt Disney, Sudha Chandran, Ravindra Jain, Arunima Sinha are a few names who never allowed their physical weakness to take over their spirit. They successfully created their own history.
The role of literature written in English, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu or any other language of world has been almost same that is the well-being of humanity, to promote co-existence, and fraternity. In English studies, folks with certain deformities have been represented and addressed by both kinds of writers- Physically hale and hearty and physically deformed. In this series we have Shakespeare, John Milton, Alexander Pope, Samuel Johnson, Harper Lee, Sylvia Plath, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Scott Fitzgerald, Herman Melville, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Albert Camus, Anita Desai, Rohinton Mistry, Mahesh Dattani, Firdaus Kanga, Yasmin Sawhney, Jeeja Ghosh, Shivani Gupta, Preeti Monga, Naseema Hurzuk, Malini Chib, Alisha Rai, Padma Venkatraman and so on so forth.
The motif behind this proposed edited book is to look at the concerns of people with disabilities and how such people have been represented in English literary studies across the world. All the same, it is to bring about change in the perception of general humanity towards them so that they could not feel marginalized and segregated from the mainstream.
