General Issue 3.1 (Spring 2024)
The Journal of Consent-Based Performance invites artists, educators, and scholars to interrogate our existing practices and propose new ideas in pursuit of increasingly more equitable, ethical, anti-oppressive, and effective consent-based practices within the fields of theatre and performance. We encourage authors to submit essays that do the work of:
Analyzing or interrogating current or past understandings of and approaches to intimacy and consent—in theory or in performance practice, modeling continuous adjustment of artistic praxis
Introducing or investigating theories related to consent and power imbalances in other fields, contextualizing these theories’ potential impact upon the performance industry
Analyzing and responding to either artistic representations of or commentary upon intimacy or consent
The JCBP publishes scholarly articles analyzing, proposing, or responding to approaches to, and theories of, consent-based practice in the performing arts and performance in public arenas. All articles are reviewed through a double-blind peer reviewing process. In order to facilitate double blind peer-review, only the article title should appear at the head of the article file; the author’s name and/or institution should not appear anywhere within the article.
The JCBP also publishes peer reviewed Notes from the Field. Notes should articulate the author's insight and discoveries gained from specific projects, or perspectives on specific subjects related to the performing arts, pedagogy, and/or consent. The editorial board is specifically interested in notes that reflect upon current practice and invite readers to consider the need for further development within the field of consent-based performance; the editorial board is open to notes that critique the current state of this field as well as notes that offer alternative paths forward. Notes can be creative in format or in nature. Formats may include interviews, roundtable dialogues, descriptions of or reflections upon workshops or classroom exercises, calls to action, and discussions of emerging tools and resources.
To stand against academic gatekeeping, we do not enforce word count minimums or maximums, but we will encourage authors to edit towards clarity and accessibility in writing.
