MWASECS 2023 Conference, Nov. 16-18

The Midwestern American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies is pleased to announce that this year's MWASECS conference will be held at DePauw University in bucolic Greencastle, Indiana, November 16-18, 2023.

Here's the call for papers, panels, and roundtables:

Conference Theme: Economies

Economics comes into being as a discipline and a way of thinking in the long eighteenth century. Now a dominant discipline that has left few other academic fields or areas of life untouched, its study invites interdisciplinary research. In this regard, scholars of the eighteenth century would seem to have a distinctive, important role to play in (re)connecting economics to other disciplines and broader concerns since “the economy” in this period was not yet an independent object of science. MWASECS 2023 aims to advance our knowledge about the manifold ways that the “economic” was conceptualized, imagined, justified, and deployed in the eighteenth-century, as well as its legacies in these latter days of globalization. The theme’s rich possibilities are suggested by how easily it can be hyphenated with other terms: global, literary, racial, political, affective, narrative, credit, sexual, colonial, print media, georgic, fantastic, etc.

We invite proposals for individual papers, panels, or roundtables on any aspect of the long eighteenth century (1660-1830). Proposals are welcomed from all disciplines dealing with any facet of this period: history, race, art, religion, language, empire, science, politics, gender, philosophy, music, or any other aspect of the eighteenth-century. We encourage submissions that address the conference’s theme of “Economies,” occasioned by this year’s MWASECS location at DePauw University. With its new School of Business and Leadership, DePauw is committed to framing such study through the liberal arts: all proposals related to research and teaching in Economic Humanities are therefore especially welcome.

  1. Paper proposals should include a brief abstract of the paper (no more than 250 words), along with the presenter’s name, affiliation, and email address
  2. Panel proposals should include three to four papers united by a common theme.
  3. Roundtable discussions should include no more than six presentations focused on a particular topic.

Panel and roundtable proposals should include the panel/roundtable title; the titles and abstracts of each paper/presentation; the names, affiliations, and email addresses of presenters; and the name, affiliation, and email address of the organizer and primary contact.

The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2023. To submit, please use the Google form provided on our CFP web page to submit a paper, panel, or roundtable proposal: https://mwasecs.net/
