Christmas Issue of The Classical Connection
Call for Papers: Christmas Issue of The Classical Connection
As we await the publication of our debut Halloween issue, we wanted to post a CFP for our 2nd issue of The Classical Connection.
The theme of our Christmas issue is Yuletide Echoes.
From ancient solstice rituals to the modern glitz and commercialization of the festive season, the end-of-year celebrations have always held a mirror to the societies that celebrate them. Christmas, while often seen as a focal point, is one of many winter observances that carry the echoes of bygone eras. This issue seeks to delve deeper, exploring how the timeless wisdom of classical thought continues to shape, influence, and resonate within our contemporary Yuletide practices and beliefs.
Some possible topics might be:
- Exploring the historical and philosophical relationship between Saturnalia and Christmas.
- The tradition of gift-giving: From the Magi to Modern Day.
- The resonance of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" with ancient Stoic values.
- The evolution of Santa Claus: Drawing parallels between St. Nicholas and earlier mythical figures.
- Analyzing the symbolic representation of evergreens and the undying human spirit through times.
- How the concept of feasting during winter solstice celebrations transcends various cultures and ages.
- Why ancient mid-winter festivals still matter in the 21st century.
- The influence of Pagan Yule traditions on Christian Christmas customs.
- "Silent Night, Holy Night": The universal quest for peace and quiet reflection during the darkest days of winter.
