Greening the Medical Humanities: the Environment and the Body in Conversation

The PJMH: ThePostgraduate Journal of Medical Humanities, based at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medical History is accepting submissions for articles and book reviews for its seventh edition ‘Greening the Medical Humanities: the Environment and the Body in Conversation’. We welcome creative pieces, original articles and book reviews that engage with any aspect and interpretation of this theme.

Increasingly in the 21st century we have seen how the anthropocene encroaches on the environment, and how humanity’s interference with nature is starting to affect us as well. This edition of the journal proposes to “Green” the Medical Humanities to understand the implications of our actions and how anxieties around the environment are being portrayed in the arts and humanities. 

Topics of interest might include, but are not restricted to:

  • Affect Theory

  • Alternative Medicine and the Patient

  • Animals, Animality and Hybridity

  • Anthropocene and the Biosphere 

  • Apocalyptic Landscapes and Bodies

  • Bioethics 

  • Borders and Boundaries 

  • Dark Ecology, Ecosystems and Climate Change

  • Diseased Landscape/Diseased Body

  • Food Studies  

  • Medical Imaginaries and Imagery 

  • Public Health, Policy and Law

  • Psychogeography and Spatiality 

  • Sensibility and Romanticism 

  • Technology and the Posthuman

  • Travel and Nature Writing

Original articles should be between 5000 and 8000 words, including footnotes and bibliography; book reviews should be between 500 and 1000 words; and creative pieces no more than 3000 words. Please refer to theMRHA Style Guide for style requirements and use British spellings in all cases except for direct quotations which use alternative spellings.  We accept submissions from people attending postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes.
