Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature is one of the longest running journal publications in the field of Victorian literature. It began in 1952 under the title The Victorian Newsletter, and its transformations over the last 70 years reflects the continued growth and reputation of the journal as a key professional publication that participates in the most recent and important conversations in the discipline of Victorian studies. Victorians is published in partnership with Ohio State University Press / Journals, and is available both in hardcopy and online, hosted by Project Muse. 

Call for Papers: Victorians. A Journal of Culture and Literature welcomes submissions of new work for 2024, Summer and Winter numbers. 2024 marks the bicentenary of a number of literary, intellectual, and cultural events associated with 1824, including:

  • Science: Michael Faraday and the Royal Society
  • Periodicals: founding of Jeremy Bentham’s Westminster Review
  • Education: Manchester Mechanics’ Institute (preceded by Edinburgh, 1821 and Liverpool, Glasgow, and London in 1823)
  • Music: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
  • Social Reform: Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals established 
  • Births: Julia Kavanagh; Wilkie Collins; George MacDonald; Dayananda Saraswati (founder Arya Samaj); Edward Maitland; George M. Smith (Dictionary of National Biography)
  • Deaths: Lord Byron; Charles Maturin; Capel Lofft; Jane Taylor

Beyond bicentenaries, Victorians welcomes submissions on all aspects of Victorian literature and culture. The journal especially welcomes work on gender and race, including a focus on non-white Victorian authors.

The deadline for submissions to be considered for Summer 2024 is March 1. The deadline for submissions to be considered for the Winter 2024 is June 15, 2024.

Manuscripts should be between 7500—10,500 words and follow The MLA Manual of Style. Please submit one electronic copy to Deborah Logan at deborah.logan@wku.edu.
