Intersectional reflections on wellbeing and healthcare spaces: online symposium
Intersectional reflections on wellbeing and healthcare spaces
An online symposium at the FASS Health Hub
Lancaster University
13 and 14 May 2024
The Health Hub at Lancaster University’s Faculty for Arts and Social Sciences is seeking proposals for short (5-10 minute) papers for its upcoming online symposium. While last year’s symposium reflected broadly on the contribution of arts, social science, and humanities research to health research, this year we would like to explore some more specific themes in-depth. In recent years, Lancaster academics have made important contributions to diverse fields in these areas, which have included rethinking the future of human reproduction, redefining understandings of disability in sub-Saharan Africa, and exploring alternatives to modern hospital spaces. Drawing on this local expertise, we are keen to hear from colleagues in Lancaster and beyond who are working on health-related research in the fields of disability studies, mental health, gender and sexuality, and healthcare spaces.
We are delighted to welcome Dr Anna McFarlane (University of Leeds) and Dr Nicola Williams (Lancaster University) as our keynotes speakers, and encourage paper proposals from scholars internal and external to Lancaster University.
Suggested topics might include but are not restricted to:
- The medicalisation of sexuality, past and present;
- Qualitative research on the lived experience of disabled people;
- Research on human reproduction, past, present and future;
- Shifting historical understandings of disability, mental health, sexuality, and gender;
- Spaces, architectures, and environments of health and healthcare;
- The intersection of health research and technology;
- Reflections on collaborations with external partners in these areas.
If you would like to take part in the symposium, please send a short (50-word) bio and abstract of no more than 300 words to fasshealthhub@lancaster.ac.uk by Friday 15 March.
