PAMLA 2024 Panel: Gothic
With the advent of 2021, there has been a perceptible shift in gothic focus. Viewers have been treated to network hauntings – CBS’ Ghosts (USA) and GhostsUK, cinematic –The Voyage of the Demeter, and streaming – The Fall of the House of Usher. This year marks the 215th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth and the 175th anniversary of his death in Baltimore. In February, Dr. Martens released its gothic line of footwear. Writers are embracing the gothic for its inclusive and representational nature, continuing to front prose about women (Isabel Cañas’ La Hacienda), queer characterization (Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto; Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House; Jewelle Gomez’s The Gilda Stories), and Indigenous characterization (Stephen Graham Jones’ The Only Good Indians), to name a few.
This in person panel welcomes submissions about all aspects of the gothic and all media forms (literature, film, television, fashion, etc.). Feel free to submit an abstract about the gothic in translation (the non-binding conference theme of “Translation in Action”). Please contact me if you have any questions.
