SAMLA Conference: Closeted & Uncloseted: Narrating Queer Spaces and Identities
Closeted & Uncloseted: Narrating Queer Spaces and Identities
This year's South Atlantic Modern Language Association conference will be held November 15-17 in Jacksonville, Florida. Please share the following Queer Studies CFP with colleagues, grad students, and others who may be interested in participating:
In keeping with the theme of this year’s SAMLA Conference, “Seen/Unseen,” the Queer Studies Group invites presentations that analyze how queer spaces and identities are narrated in literature, film, and video games through the metaphor of closets. Questions that can be examined include the following: How is the closet both a safe space and a suffocating space? Who has the privilege to come out of the closet? How is staying in the closet a form of privilege? What does it mean to be publicly closeted? Do closets have magical or healing properties? How do closets or spaces such as wardrobes, cupboards, attics, and basements serve as queer spaces in fantasy and science fiction?
Please send an abstract of 150-250 words along with a short CV to hsierra@bowiestate.edu by July 15. Please note if you require AV equipment for your presentation.
