Making Citation Visible: Merging and Emerging Visions
2025 MLA Roundtable
Making Citation Visible: Merging and Emerging Visions
In the new digital landscape, how can we use and teach citation to represent the diversity of sources that our students use–from activist posts on Instagram to viral trends on TikTok? What do we need to preserve about citation, and how does it need to evolve to match the complexity of the world our students experience? Do citation models need to shift as students create multimodal assignments like podcasts and videos that complicate traditional citation structures? How should we conceive of authorship in a digital arena where anonymity is often the default? This roundtable invites discussion on re-envisioning citation style in the digital world, including adaptive multimodal strategies, hybrid/hyperlink models, AI challenges, pedagogical innovations, and using citation to counter the tyranny of digital anonymity.
We invite applications for a Roundtable at the 2025 MLA Convention in New Orleans. Submit 250-word Abstract and 100-word Bio by Tuesday, March 26th
