Call 21: Silence

Silence is quietude, calmness, stillness and speechlessness: it is the absence of sound. It could be a moment of creation. It could point to a sense of deep understanding– the kind where words are redundant. In interpersonal relationships, it could signify aloofness: the desire to not engage with or neglect others. While silence in the face of incessant chatter is a sign of self-assuredness, silence in the face of oppression stems from fear: it denotes a submission to the powers that be and leads to complicity. It can be self-willed, externally enforced, manipulative or simply a matter of habit. Finally, silence is a reminder of the vastness of human experience, which cannot ever be fully articulated through language. 

In Hakara’s 21st edition, we are interested in exploring the different facets of silence through visual, literary, critical, and other experimental forms.

Accepting Submissions for

Essays, Fiction, Poetry, Visual Narratives, Art Criticism, Book Reviews, Cultural Criticism or Translations.
