Countervisuality
Stefan Jovanovic (Concordia University) and Tyisha Murphy (Concordia University)
Session type: Paper session
This session seeks to explore the diverse ways in which visual cultures challenge, undermine, and provide alternatives to dominant narratives of power and authority. In The Right to Look (2011), Nicholas Mirzoeff has investigated how ‘countervisualities’ emerge in response to the regimes of visuality that support these structures of power (the plantation, imperial, and military-industrial complexes). We invite submissions that explore countervisuality within and beyond these frameworks, addressing the intersections of art, politics, and social justice. Proposals may consider (but are not limited to): visual strategies of resistance in anti-imperial movements; countervisual representations of colonial violence and its legacies, Indigenous countervisual practices and their impacts on colonial narratives; the role of art and visual culture in labour movements and anti-fascist resistance; contemporary countervisualities challenging the military- industrial complex; countervisualities in digital and social media; intersections of race, gender, and countervisuality in challenging spatial segregation and social order.
Proposals must be submitted using the “Proposals” form and sent directly to the chairs of the session (stefan.jovanovic@concordia.ca and tyishamurphy@gmail.com):
