Dune — From Herbert’s to Villeneuve’s (PAMLA, roundtable) **LAST CALL**
PAMLA will meet next within a year of the sixtieth anniversary of Frank Herbert’s Dune, which appeared in August of 1965. We will also be within a year since the appearance of the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s widely praised adaptation of it, in anticipation of part three of his projected trilogy adapting its sequel Dune Messiah (1969). Being at the intersection of these two accomplishments is occasion for a fourfold exploration—(i) of Villeneuve’s adaptation in its own right, as so far realized, (ii) of the various ways it amends the original, (iii) of what this may allow us to anticipate in part three’s adaptation of Dune Messiah, and (iv) of the relationship between Villeneuve’s overall project and Herbert’s, as it continues to develop in Children of Dune (1976), in the sequel trilogy—God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)—and in Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson’s posthumous execution of Herbert’s “Dune 7” notes in Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007).
Any and all approaches welcome.
