Bodies of Feminist Resistance: Archives and Practices in Spain and Latin America
Bodies of Feminist Resistance: Archives and Practices in Spain and Latin America - Panel Discussion at NeMLA 2025, "(R)EVOLUTION"
Host Institution: La Salle University
Hotel & Convention Site: Philadelphia Marriott Downtown
Dates: March 6-9, 2025
Departing from 'the body' as a terrain of feminist analysis and resistance, this panel seeks to explore the wide range of interventions re-imagining 'the political' in contemporary Spain and Latin America.
At the interstices of social movements and the arts, this panel seeks to trace possible genealogies of feminist action politicizing the body in numerous ways. In this vein, we welcome proposals navigating the conceptual, performative, and archival nature
of 'the body' in different contexts of feminist organizing.
Drawing parallelisms between dictatorial conjunctures and the consolidation of neoliberalism from the 1970s to the present day, this panel interrogates the resonances/dissonances of feminist practices and imaginaries in Spain and Latin America. Inspired by feminist studies, queer theories, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, eco-criticism, and contemporary philosophy addressing embodied forms of 'the political', we welcome proposals tackling, but not restricted, to the following questions:
How does 'the body' channels and contests patriarchal oppressions? How do feminist subjects and collectivities become bodies of resistance? In which ways does 'the body' inform feminist theories? How do situated cases based in Spain and Latin America contribute to philosophical discussions around 'the body'? How does a feminist framework around 'the body' enriches research on dictatorial violences? How does 'the body' disrupt binaries between political subjects and collectivities?
Panel Format
The panel format consists of the reading of a formal paper of 15-20 minutes (2500-3000 words) as set by the chairs followed by Q&A. We hope to create a space for feminist exchange and discussion.
