Performing Latinidad (NeMLA)
This panel examines how the dynamics of race, gender, sexuality, and class of Latinidad become negotiated by the performing arts. We consider Latine and Latin American performance not as a singular category, but as artistic acts specific to medium and lived experience. We intend to have a global and hemispheric perspective that focus on what performers do, be it live in front of an audience or for a recorded form.
The perspective this panel takes is inspired by Ralph Rodriguez and new perspectives in Latine and Latin American studies studies that reject the idea that the 33 nations of Latin America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas can be categorized as a single body of artistic knowledge. We will apply this perspective to performance because each performance can be seen as a unique expression of Latinidad.
We seek to discuss these issues through performance art, film/television, music, theatre, dance, time arts, literature, and other forms. Presentation of creative work is welcome and encouraged. Email abstracts to adiazhui@princeton.edu.
