Hello! This is a CFP for the ASLE 2025 Biennial Conference, which will take place July 8-11 in College Park, MD. In accordance with the ASLE 2025 theme (“Collective Atmospheres: Air, Intimacy, and Inequality”), I am soliciting proposals for scholarly presentations that consider the ways in which climate engineering, geoengineering, terraforming (and other related processes) disturb the atmosphere. The panel’s overall purpose is to explore how different representations of and engagements with atmospheric disturbances present opportunities for environmental and climate justice while serving as solutions to potential social and ecological issues like climate change. Presentations can include fictional and nonfictional accounts of atmospheric disturbances, and I welcome critical approaches derived from ecocriticism, environmental humanities, environmental history, and cultural studies. I am also interested in projects that consider these topics in Asian Pacific, Caribbean, African, and Central and South American contexts.

I intend to propose “Atmospheric Disturbances” as a traditional panel consisting of four, 15-minute scholarly presentations; depending on the number of submissions, I would consider proposing a roundtable or paper jam to ensure a plurality of perspectives. To ensure this panel proposal meets ASLE’s deadline for pre-formed panels (11:59 PM PST Friday, January 3, 2025), this CFP’s deadline is 11:59 PM EST Monday, December 9. I will review proposals and communicate decisions by 11:59 EST PM Thursday, December 12, after which time I will share the complete proposal with the panel’s participants.
