Issue V: Disability Studies

Perspectives is a bilingual double-blind peer-reviewed, annual E-journal published by Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi with eISSN 2583 - 4762.

Disability Studies is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field, interrogating the entrenched norms of race, gender, and ableism. It seeks to challenge longstanding societal structures shaped by ableism, which have governed policies, institutions, and interactions for centuries. By questioning binaries and divisions, Disability Studies provides a framework to recognize and dismantle systems of marginalization and discrimination.

This issue of Perspectives invites papers that explore the diverse dimensions of disability, advocating for a more inclusive society where differences are embraced and marginalized voices are central to social change. We encourage an examination of disability as a spectrum of experiences and identities, extending beyond physical impairments to include mental health challenges such as depression and grief. For instance, papers could engage with literary depictions of disability or depression in canonical texts, like Ibsen and their effect on our understanding of the human condition. Similarly, ancient Indian literature portrayal of figures like Shakuni and Dhritrashtra wherein an understanding of disabilities as karmic consequences has been prevalent can be interrogated. In modern and contemporary Indian history, the ways in which disability and ableism have been woven into the broader contexts of caste, gender, and class is a possible area of exploration.

These depictions invite us to reconsider what qualifies as a disability. Is disability purely physical, or does it encompass broader social exclusions, such as limited access to knowledge, public spaces, and opportunities? This inquiry is crucial in addressing ableism and understanding how social structures can perpetuate forms of disability.

We seek submissions that engage with these themes, and explore the intersection of disability, power, and identity while envisioning societal transformations that promote equality and inclusivity. We welcome contributions that address these themes through critical analysis, historical case studies, interrogation of social hierarchies, or explorations of how disability has been represented in political movements, public policy, or cultural production throughout India's history. Interdisciplinary perspectives are encouraged to critique and reimagine the systems of power that define and limit what we recognize as disability.

We invite original and unpublished research papers and review articles from various disciplines of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences on the theme of Disability Studies for publication in the forthcoming issue to be released in May 2025. The articles should be original research work revolving around the theme of the issue.

• Disability and Identity
• Health and Disability
• Disability in Global Contexts
• Disability and Activism
• Disability and Family Dynamics
• Disability and the Built Environment

These topics can be adapted and narrowed down based on specific interests, disciplinary approaches, or particular case studies, providing a solid foundation for in-depth research in disability studies.

In addition to research articles, Perspectives also invites book reviews and film reviews, as well as creative pieces / personal thoughts raising critical questions that pertain to the theme of the issue. These would be included under the journal section called Conversations.

Guidelines for submission

1. Manuscripts (including references) should be prepared in Microsoft Word, Times New Roman font, 12 point size, and should be sent to us via email.

2. The text should be submitted only when it is complete in all respects, including all relevant preliminary matter, all documents provided by the publisher (including illustrations and copyright permissions, Contract, etc).

3. Preliminary matter should include all of the following and in this order:

● The title page with the title and subtitle and your name as author or editor

● List of abbreviations, plates, figures, maps and tables.

● An abstract of 150-200 words.

● Please provide 80‐100 word bio note with postal address, e‐mail and phone details. This note should be on a separate document, not included in the main body of the paper.

● Name of the contributor should not appear anywhere in the main body of the paper.

● The papers will be sent for blind peer review after being selected for publication. The decision of the editorial board will be final in accepting or rejecting the article.
