Call for Papers: Exploring the Untold Stories of Black Enrollees in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Land, Labor, and Legacy: Black CCC Enrollees in the US South
We invite scholars, community activists, and historians to submit chapters for an upcoming book on the largely unexplored experiences of Black enrollees in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression, with a focus on the American South. This volume seeks to illuminate the labor conditions, social dynamics, and enduring legacies of Black participants in this pivotal New Deal program.
Key Topics for Submission:
- Labor conditions and experiences of Black enrollees
- Social dynamics and racial segregation in Southern CCC camps
- Contributions of Black women in the CCC's She She She program
- The role of race in shaping spatial imaginaries and environments
- The lasting impact of the CCC on Black communities in the South
Submission Guidelines:
- Chapter Length: Approximately 5,000-8,000 words
- Format: Double-spaced, 12-point font, with clear citations in Chicago style
- Abstract: A 250-word abstract outlining the chapter's key arguments and contributions
- Author Bio: A brief biographical sketch of the author(s)
Submission Deadline:
- Proposal (500 words max) and bio (150 words max) due by December 1, 2024.
- Abstract Acceptance: Notified by January 6, 2025.
- Final Chapter Submission: Due by May 5, 2025.
