Call for Papers

One of the pivotal words in today’s world is “mobility,” for it resonatesin political speeches, in media discourses, in the humanities and social sciences, and in literary productions. Indeed, this ubiquity is but a discursive translation of the unprecedented surge of movement and mobility which the contemporary world is witnessing. It is undeniablethat movement has always been an inherent rudiment of the human condition, and the history of mass migrations is a lucid evidence, yet the difference between then and now is the ambit, the speed, and the patterns of mobility. Travelers, immigrants, refugees, exiles, expatriates, tourists, guestworkers, and nomads have all been involved in a colossal flux of mobility across global borders. Still and all, this mobility is no longer confined to territorial borders, but it rather entails a planetary movement across geo-political, national, social, cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and even psychological borders.

Still, the essence of the debate on mobility in various disciplines, including literary, cultural, and interdisciplinary studies, stems from the existential and conceptual conundrums this notion has brought to the surface. Mobility has, among other things, paradoxically defined and problematized the contours of humanity. Through its questioning of the classical meanings of borders, home, nation, migration, and culture, alongside other traditional identity markers, it has called into question the sense of the self and identity while at the same time giving birth to new modes of identity formations. These formations and transformations are academically hypostatized and literarily represented through the examination of such intricate epiphenomenal concepts as diaspora, transnationalism, border-crossing, postnation, postmigration, transculturalism, hybridity, cultural diversity, and liminality.

In light of this, this conference, organized by the Research Laboratory in Literature, Language, Culture and Communication (RLLLCC) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Beni Mellal, seeks to bring to the limelight the recent trends underlying the dynamics, manifestations, and patterns of mobility in literature, culture and society by bringing together scholars and researchers from manifold backgrounds. The topics may include but are not limited to the following:

No registration fees. Accommodation and travel expenses will remain at the cost of the participants.
