Richard D. Gooder Essay Prize
Submissions are invited for the Richard D. Gooder Essay Prize, offered by Cambridge Quarterly, a journal published by Oxford University Press. The Prize is open to doctoral students and those who have submitted their thesis within the last calendar year, and offers a prize of £300 and publication in the journal.
The Cambridge Quarterly is a journal of literary and cultural criticism with a broad remit. Our focus is largely on scholarship on Anglophone literature, but we also welcome work on writing in languages other than English, as well as on film, music, theatre, television, dance, the visual arts and other cultural and artistic forms, singly or in comparison.
This prize, named in memory of Richard Gooder (1934-2017), one of the journal’s founding editors, is aimed at doctoral students. The journal remains committed to Richard’s belief that good criticism should sharpen our appreciation of all aspects of literature and culture, and should be understandable to non-specialists, with no dilution or dulling of its critical edge. But there are many ways to proceed. Intellectual hospitality was Richard’s style, and so this Prize welcomes a broad range of critical approaches. We are particularly interested in essays that explore the relationship between different art forms or media, including painting, film, radio, music, dance, television and literature.
The deadline for the 2024 prize has been extended to *27 November*.
