The professional journey of children’s and young adult literature scholars, librarians, and educators often involves significant transitions. These transitions present unique opportunities and challenges, often requiring redefinition of identity, reevaluation of goals, and the navigation of new professional landscapes. For this year’s “Building a Career Panel,” the Membership Committee invites proposals for an interactive workshop panel that explores the diverse experiences of career transitions within the field of children’s and young adult literature. This session will be split into groups, each focused on a different topic, and we are particularly interested in submissions that address (but are not limited to): the evolution of scholarly identity from graduate studies to early-career and mid-career; transitions from mid-career to late-career or into retirement; shifts into new fields of scholarship or interdisciplinary work; experiences of leaving academia for alternative career paths; and the emotional, intellectual, and practical challenges of career change. We are seeking organizers for each group rather than traditional panelists, so, in lieu of traditional abstracts, we ask you to send your thoughts on one group that could be held in this session and the conversations you would like to lead within that group (e.g., moving from early-career to mid-career might involve questions about tenure or becoming more active in university- and field-level service). We welcome submissions from scholars, librarians, and educators (or others) at all stages of their careers, including those who have navigated transitions or are contemplating them. If you are interested in participating in this panel, send a 250-word overview of the group and conversation(s) you would like to lead to Jeremy Johnston at jjohn21@ilstu.edu by November 29. In one document, please include your name, your affiliation, what time zone you will be in for the conference, your overview, and a short (50-100-word) bio.
