MLA 2026 (Toronto, Canada) Special Session: "Food Representation in the Hispanic World"
Food transcends its role as sustenance, serving as a powerful lens through which to examine identity, memory, and power dynamics. From hunger-driven narratives to the celebratory and symbolic depictions of meals in contemporary cinema and television, food occupies a central place in Hispanic cultural productions. It can represent tradition and identity, critique societal norms, or even subvert power structures.
This session invites scholars to critically explore the multifaceted meanings of food in Hispanic literature, cookbooks, comics, film, and television. Potential topics include the interplay between recipes, family, and national identity; the role of cooking in constructing cultural memory; food’s depiction in travel narratives; or its use as a vehicle for resistance and subversion in visual media.
As Food Studies continues to gain momentum in academic discourse, this session offers a dynamic space to analyze how food reflects and shapes cultural production. Scholars are encouraged to submit 200-word abstracts in Spanish or English to contribute to this flavorful and interdisciplinary conversation. Join us in delving into the symbolic and narrative power of food across the Hispanic World!
