History, Representation, Diversity
(under contract with Palgrave Macmillan)
Deadline for abstracts: 31 January 2025
First drafts: 31 March 2025
Submission of manuscript: 1 July 2025
This book project adopts an explicitly interdisciplinary approach, which seeks to combine findings from cultural studies, literary studies, film & media studies as well as sociology, politics, theology, education, etc. to paint a multi-faceted picture of British Chinese lived and mediated experiences. We invite scholarly work focussing on minorities within the British Chinese ‘community,’ such as queer perspectives, transracial adoptees, people with mixed heritage (e.g. Jamaican-Chinese), as well as religious minorities, to represent the complexity and plurality of what is commonly subsumed under the heading ‘British Chinese’.
We are looking for 1-2 additional contributions that preferably take into account:
-
the Covid-19 pandemic
-
history of the Chinese in Britain
-
representation in film, literature, visual arts or other media
-
intersectional approaches to identity (e.g. class, sexuality, gender, etc.)
Existing chapters focus on the following topics:
-
immigration policies
-
transnationalism
-
in/visibility
-
rural Britain (visual arts)
-
generational trauma (film)
-
transracial adoption
-
matrilineage
-
Covid-19 from a sociological and heritage angle
-
Sweet Mandarin (2013)
-
The Life of a Banana (2015)
-
Lucy Chau Lai-Tuen’s work
-
Xiaolu Guo’s novels
