Performing the Earth: Tribal Green Stage and Environmental Resilience

Performing the Earth: Tribal Green Stage and Environmental Resilience aims to explore the intersection of indigenous cultural expression, performance art, and environmental sustainability. Drawing on the profound ecological wisdom of indigenous peoples, this book focuses to present a dynamic collection of original articles, and creative works that examine how the performing arts can serve as powerful tools for environmental advocacy and resilience.

In the face of escalating environmental crises such as climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, indigenous communities have long been at the forefront of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Through their deep connection to the land, water, and ecosystems, these communities have developed unique knowledge systems that are often overlooked or marginalized in mainstream environmental discourses. This book seeks to amplify indigenous voices and knowledge, providing a platform for both traditional and contemporary expressions of environmental awareness.

At the heart of the book is the concept of the Tribal Green Stage—a space where indigenous performance, storytelling, rituals, and contemporary art converge to inspire action and dialogue around ecological resilience. The book examines how indigenous artists, cultural leaders, and environmental activists are using performance as a means of educating, advocating, and mobilizing communities to safeguard the Earth.

Contributors to this volume—scholars, artists, activists, and indigenous leaders—will aim to offer diverse perspectives on how performance can promote environmental justice, raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, and call for a reimagining of human-nature relationships. The chapters will engage with themes such as the role of indigenous knowledge in climate change mitigation, the potential of the arts to bridge cultural divides, and the ways in which indigenous performance traditions can provide pathways to environmental healing and resilience.

Aim: The aim of Performing the Earth: Tribal Green Stage and Environmental Resilience is to explore and highlight the critical role of indigenous knowledge, cultural expression, and performance arts in fostering environmental sustainability and resilience. The edited volume seeks to create a space where indigenous perspectives on ecology, environmental stewardship, and the interconnectedness of humans and nature can be shared, celebrated, and amplified through creative and performative practices.
