Call for Proposals: Thinking Politics Book Series (Edinburgh University Press)

Artificial intelligence, technological oligarchy, the environment in distress, a growing authoritarianism and postcolonial imperialism — just some of the flashpoints of the current millennium.

And yet, from the margins, fresh voices emerge, innovative social movements and protest coalitions arise and challenge technocracy and populism.

Who are the thinkers who can seed the changes that matter most to us today?

How can political theory take us forward, in positive ways?

Be part of a series that aims to transmit the best ideas of sometimes marginalised thinkers, transforming our lives through new ways of thinking, acting and being in this world.

What are their most important ideas? How do they intersect with real struggles? Why should activists outside the academy care? How do the ideas stack up when critically probed? Can the new direction be refined?

Books in the Thinking Politics book series provide critical overviews of contemporary thought from political philosophers and social theorists, mainly in the continental tradition. They open a space for new voices and new directions, as well as for fresh interpretations of canonical thinkers. With a particular focus on the contribution of female philosophers, and a strong interest in presenting the work of post-colonial thinkers, Thinking Politics welcomes intellectual and social diversity.

Authors of books in the Thinking Politics series are typically strong early-career or mid-career researchers, with a serious record of journal publishing on the topic and thinker in question.

Titles in the series introduce the key concepts, arguments and developments of the thinker’s work. They are critical, with an analytic and reflective component which addresses the major debates around the thinker, and shapes future reception of their work. They should be accessible enough for undergraduate and graduate students, while also satisfying researchers in the area.

Please email expressions of interest to the general editor, Dr Geoff M Boucher: boucher@deakin.edu.au.

The expression of interest should contain:

  • Details of the applicant’s doctoral qualification and current university post
  • The proposed title, in the form Thinker X and Politics, with a 250 word description of the project
  • A short-form, bibliographic entry-style description of the applicant’s publication record, with publications on the target thinker marked with a preceding asterisk

Titles in the series will typically be 80,000 words in length

The editor will not read unsolicited manuscripts.

Suitable applicants will be invited to submit proposals to Edinburgh University Press for review. This involves a blind referee process and critical scrutiny of a detailed plan for the proposed book.
