Democracy has a strange quality, that it is systematically ambiguous. Recently, the ambiguity has led to contestations that has questioned the very foundations of democratic values and principles. The erosion of faith and conflicts around the globe is evidenced through collapse of democratic regimes or call to reform democratic practices to be replaced by more rigid or powerful structures. Many believe the rise in inequality, drastic climate changes, migration, religious fundamentalism and lack of basic facilities and growing social, political and economic insecurities has been some of the factors, that led many to question the legitimacy of democratic institutions and practices. The changes that has taken place in the last few decades in the Indian sub- continent offers an opportunity to analyse and probably predict the future challenges. From justification of democracy to the need to defend best political system, any intervention demands a deeper understanding of the system and practices whether it advances epistemic grounds, consequentialist or for the reasons of intrinsic fairness. How does democracy foster pluralistic challenges without risking the central interests of the minorities, or excessively curtailing the power of majorities, or risking democracy itself through misplaced tolerance? There are also questions about the very concept of democracy and how far it can be viewed as a device for protecting rights, a device for aggregating mere preferences, a device for distributing power, or a device for identifying political truths? The scope of democracy and its extensions to institutions and practices has been contested in recent years and this call for paper intends to reflects work related to the above mentioned issues.

This call for paper invites contribution for the edited volume titled “Ethics of democracy” and specifically encourages papers to tackle the ethical and philosophical issues that analyses democratic principles and practices in global south.
