ASA 2025: Trans Studies Under Trump 2.0
I would like to (co)organize a panel on trans studies under Trump 2.0 for the 2025 meeting of the American Studies Association, which will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from November 20-22. This is, obviously, a fraught and rapidly evolving subject, but here are some of the topics I would like to broach:
- the institutional futures of trans studies, or lack thereof
- the connections between Trump's attacks on trans children and on trans studies (or "woke gender ideology")
- the relations between trans, feminist, and queer theory as different component parts of "woke gender ideology"
- the relations between Trump's attacks on "woke gender ideology" and CRT (if we do a panel, I would like to write a paper on this subject, analyzing how anti-Black racism suffuses the anti-gender agenda, through a close reading of Trump's XOs)
- the structural causes that have made transness such a hot-button issue for the New Right: neoliberalism? anti-Blackness? transmisogyny?
- reframing Trumpism in a global context, where anti-gender ideology and fascist tendencies are spreading around the world
- resisting transphobia and Trumpism. I'm interested in theories of political resistance as well as discussions about aesthetic resistance, etc.
- trans DIY
Please email me at mstekl@stanford.edu if you are interested. ASA wants a 500-word abstract for each paper as well as a 500-word abstract for the panel as a whole, so please send me two abstracts: a longer one for your paper, and 2-4 sentences to be included in the session abstract. Please also send a short bio (max 350 words). Commentators and/or chairs are also very welcome.
