The Martineau Society will be hosting its annual conference in Tynemouth, England. The Martineau Society conference is an interdisciplinary conference that focuses on the lives, work, and contributions of the Martineau family, including its two most famous and influential members, Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) and James Martineau (1805-1900). Tynemouth is where, with the onset of her illness, Harriet Martineau took lodgings from 1840 to 1845 to be near her doctor and family members in Newcastle and where she wrote The Playfellow series of children’s books, the novel The Hour and the Man, and Life in the Sick-Room.
The Martineau Society encourages scholarship on the Martineau family and their nineteenth-century context as well as their continuing influence.

The conference will be held at the Grand Hotel Tynemouth in Tynemouth, England, from Sunday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Individual paper presentations, including a question and answer session, are approximately 40 minutes, depending upon number of conference presenters. Anyone interested in giving a shorter 20-minute paper should indicate this preference on the registration form.
