“Rethinking the Humanities II: Past, Present, and Future”

***Non-Guaranteed Session***

The Forum on Seventeenth-Century English Studies (LLC 17th-Century English) organized  the first roundtable of “Rethinking the Humanities: Past, Present, and Future” at the 2025 MLA Convention. The generative opening remarks led to inspiring conversations that we think need to be continued at next year’s MLA. Like the first roundtable, we endeavor to gather scholars of the early modern period who can speak to the ways that their archives, ways of knowing/methods, questions, and pedagogies shape the work they do in and out of the academy. In addition to featuring scholars of the early modern period who focus on anglophone texts, we also invite scholars who study other 17th century cultures and linguistic traditions.

Possible topics include:

  • *Collaborative work with students/community partners (This was an area of focus at the 2025 MLA)
  • *Survival tactics for teaching in the midst of political/social antagonism  and oppression (This was an area of focus at the 2025 MLA)
  • Community Engaged Work/Public Humanities
  • Re-evaluating course content for early modern seminars
  • Teaching the Global Early Modern
  • Humanities Curriculum Planning
  • The Place of the Humanities in the University
